#Found: Joseph Altmeyer

Joseph Altmayer was born on January 29, 1914, in Forbach, Département Moselle, France. He was a miner and a roofer. He and his wife Anne (née Preschbill) had six children together. In March 1943, he was conscripted into military service by the National Socialists in occupied Alsace. The entries on his military identification card show that he had previously served in the French army from 1935 to 1936 and from 1939 to 1940. The Secret State Police (Gestapo) arrested Joseph Altmayer in Saarbrücken in August 1944. On October 23, 1944, he was deported to Dachau concentration camp. He survived the inhuman treatment he received there and later declared to his liberators that he had resisted conscription into the German Wehrmacht. In 2022, we were able to find Joseph Altmeyer's family and return his personal belongings.
